AC Repair or Replace? How Dallas Homeowners Can Decide

It's the question every Dallas homeowner eventually faces, usually in the middle of August: sink more money into the old system, or invest in a new one? There's no universal answer, but there is honest math. Here's how we walk our own customers through the decision.
Start with the age of the system
A well-maintained central AC in North Texas typically lasts 12 to 15 years — our cooling season runs seven months and regularly tops 100°F, so systems here work harder than the national average.
- Under 10 years old: repair is almost always the right call, especially if the unit is still under manufacturer warranty.
- 10 to 15 years: it depends on the repair. A failed capacitor? Fix it. A failed compressor? Time to run the numbers.
- Over 15 years: even a modest repair is often money spent on borrowed time.
The $5,000 rule of thumb
A quick gut check used across the industry: multiply the repair cost by the system's age in years. If the result is over 5,000, replacement usually wins. A $600 repair on an 8-year-old unit (4,800) is reasonable; the same repair on a 12-year-old unit (7,200) is a warning sign.
The R-22 refrigerant problem
If your system was installed before 2010, it may run on R-22 refrigerant, which the EPA phased out of production in 2020. Remaining supplies are recycled and expensive, so a simple refrigerant leak on an R-22 system can turn into one of the costliest repairs on the menu. For most R-22 systems, a major repair is the moment to replace instead.
What a new system buys you in Texas
Modern systems are dramatically more efficient than what was standard 15 years ago. Moving from an older 10-SEER unit to a modern high-efficiency system can cut summer cooling costs substantially — and in a Dallas summer, cooling is most of your electric bill. Add better humidity control, quieter operation, and a fresh 10-year parts warranty, and replacement often costs less over five years than keeping an old unit limping along.
Signs it's time to replace, not repair
- Second major repair in two years
- Electric bills creeping up each summer with no change in usage
- The system runs constantly on 100° days and still can't hold temperature
- Uneven cooling, humidity problems, or excessive noise
- It uses R-22 refrigerant and has a leak
Get both numbers before you decide
